Best Kept Secrets

October 18, 2017

If Chatham remains “the prettiest little town in Southside Virginia,” then Reid Street Gallery has to be at the top of the list for one of Chatham’s “best kept secrets”. Thank you, Betty Camp and friends, for choosing this venue to present the Pittsylvania Historical Society’s fall membership meeting and to bring to life the memories of our dear friend, Preston Moses.

Although he and his beloved wife, Minnie, were not actual performers under the Big Top, they were always there when the circus rolled into town, reporting the good, the bad, and yes, the ugly in Pittsylvania County. From the “clicks” of Chatham to court reporting, which was always politically correct, they brought to life the lives and living in Southside Virginia, the likes we have yet to see.

The meeting was enjoyable and enlightening as many friends shared memories of this couple whose roots were planted deep in Southside Virginia’s fertile soil. Preston’s colorful paintings created after his retirement can be found in Chatham First’s 2018 calendar, which is now for sale. Although he never claimed kin to Grandma Moses, after seeing his artistic offerings, one must wonder if he should have done so.

Thanks again Betty and friends for this wonderful program – what a great way to celebrate the fall season in Southside Virginia.
